My Learning Journey during my Residency at High Tech High GSE & Lemon Grove School District
During my residency I researched the importance of implementing Social Emotional Learning with fidelity in classrooms. There is a growing body of literature on the benefits of social emotional learning (SEL) in schools. SEL has been linked to improvements in academic outcomes, social and emotional skills, mental health, and overall well-being of students.

Supporting EML Students with Core Math Concepts
During the 2022-2023 school year, I used improvement science to guide my research into Emergent Multi-language Learners (EML). I implemented math interventions in fourth and fifth grade to determine effective strategies for supporting students in gaining a deeper understanding of foundational math skills with the further goal of raising standardized test math scores.

How does peer critique and self-evaluation affect the classroom learning experience?
In order to implement critique in my classroom, I first had to introduce it. Some of the students had previous experience because they where students in my 7th grade class last year. The majority of students though, had no idea what it meant, looked like or had ever experienced getting and giving feedback with peers. The first part of my research involved giving pre-surveys so I could get a better idea of student experiences, comfort levels and motivation and effort when it comes to their schoolwork.

What happens when I design projects with differentiation in mind?
During the course of my action research, I explored how differentiation techniques can compliment the philosophies of project based learning (PBL). Students in my 7th grade English class at Lakeside Middle School participated in a trimester long differentiated PBL experience. Through the analysis of surveys, interviews, exit cards, and class observations, I was able to discover what differentiation strategies were the most meaningful for students. I found that providing choice, exhibiting models, and creating meaningful student groups greatly impacted the quality of student products. These findings indicate that specific differentiation strategies can assist teachers with creating projects that are accessible for all students.

Twitter as a low-stakes, high-reward tool for connecting educators and sharing practice
Wendy had to actively seek out opportunities to connect with others, share the work of her classroom, and move her learning beyond the walls of her school. Wendy met with teachers outside her school, joined the National Writing Project, and created a Twitter account.

We change the future of education by changing who is proctoring the learning.
I pride myself on using social emotional development practices that are student centered and help students self-regulate their own thought processes, emotions and schema in a climate that supports belonging and inclusion for all. I believe students should be taught to think, not follow directions or seek approval and they can take on difficult questions from the start. School is the vehicle that takes children to their desired status, self sufficiency. Knowledge improves the human condition and to provide the rigor necessary to push the next generation of change makers, students will require a teacher with real world experience and candor.

How do we help new families as they transition into HTHCV?
I have created/ designed a series of workshops to help support new families as they transition into HTHCV. At the new family information night a survey was distributed to parents and the data collected will serve as a guide using the parent ranking to create the workshops. The idea is to offer one workshop per quarter, four total in the year. As well as gather resources, and offer a place where they can find those resources in a variety of languages, with a possible a link on the PA website is an avenue that I hope to use.

What happens when students use digital storytelling to tell the stories of themselves and others?
Digital storytelling can have a life-changing impact on the people who share, produce, and view the stories. It was the end of my second year teaching multimedia at High Tech Middle Media Arts, and I was reading the reflections from my students about their digital storytelling project on the defining moments of veterans in San Diego.
