How can we help kids help each other?
When students need help, the first person they usually turn to is the teacher. While a teacher is responsible for leading a class of learners, she or he is not the only person who can help. What if students turned to each other first? The vision of a class that capitalizes on every human resource in the room was the inspiration for this action research study. “How can we help kids help each other?”

Learning to Talk About Race: One School's Journey
It is well documented that a student’s race impacts their academic achievement. However, schools do not prioritize talking about race and many school leaders struggle with beginning or sustaining these conversations in a meaningful way. Through my action research cycles, I identified key structures to help support conversations on race as well as discovered important lessons for any school leader looking to do this work.

What do students communicate about the relationship between school and internships?
I tracked and analyzed the fall 2008 semester of the HTH internship program. I then developed my own research-based curricula and implemented in the spring 2009 semester. Throughout this process, I listened to and read what students communicate about the relationship between school and work in an effort to continue to improve my practices in the classroom.

A constructivist approach to restorative practices
Restorative practices emphasize the role of individuals as valued community members, and support students’ social and emotional learning, and help students build the skills necessary for them to become effective communicators, problem solvers, ethical decision makers, and global citizens.

There are also places where you can let your child play, so there are many families who go to enjoy in the service area besides being on the way to go somewhere.

How do teachers and students foster peer advising relationships and how do these advising networks impact student learning?
What are you looking at? This is a map of connections that students within a ninth grade high school class have with one another. These students were asked: Who do you go to for feedback to improve your work? Such mapping makes a powerful tool for studying and influencing the way students interact positively with one another.

The Pursuit of Equitable & Student-centered Deep Mathematical Discourse
In my practice as an educator, I have seen the tremendous impact that facilitative mathematics teaching and deep mathematical discourse has on student learning, conceptual understanding, and overall development as critical thinkers and problemsolvers. The role of the teacher is crucial in orchestrating deep mathematical discourse that engages and guides students toward a learning goal. When a teacher takes the role as a facilitator of learning, it is essential that the educator has a deep understanding of content in order to plan worthwhile tasks, strategically guide student inquiry to surface learning outcomes and address misconceptions that arise.

How can ALEKS be implemented to best support the High Tech High math program?
“For the leadership project, Ryan Gallagher and I explored the question of how we could use and implement the ALEKS math software into the HTH math program. We both used ALEKS in our class. Ryan used it for select students. I had all of my students using it.
We completed teacher surveys for several of the teachers implementing it, a student survey, student interviews that were videotaped, had a student panel, and held several meetings on the topic of using ALEKS in the class. “
